My apologies to readers who are not country music fans, but this song really speaks to me as we begin our journey to a family. Pay attention to the lyrics.
This is our theme song for our infertility journey thus far, since it has been mostly just following our hearts and trying to do what is best for us. My favourite lines are in the chorus, "You wanna give up 'cause it's dark/
We're really not that far apart/Let your heart sweetheart/Be your compass when you're lost/You should follow it wherever it may go./When it's all said and done/You can walk instead of run/Because no matter what you'll never be alone." And that truly speaks to me, it just makes me realize that we need to follow our hearts and regardless of the outcome we won't be alone, because we have each other for support. Even with all of the drama, frustration, waiting, and a lot of our friends' misunderstanding as to what my condition is really all about, we are together and can get through this and hopefully someday have a baby or child of our own, regardless of how it comes to be.
As you read in my post Man VS Woman, we deal with a lot of confusion, misunderstanding, simple un-education and plain stupidity when people find out about my MRKH and our struggle with infertility. It s a hard time for anyone to start a family, but especially so when you are dealing with prejudice from everyone else. It is a constant struggle even among our family to help them understand what we are going through. Some people try very hard to relate to what we are going through (and we have an INCREDIBLE immediate family for trying their best to understand, even if they just don't. Their intentions as good!) and some people (like his co-workers) don't even try to listen to the whole story, they just come up with something else completely. I've tried setting the record straight with people like them, and it is better off left alone. They are still convinced I am really a man, and that my fiance is gay, and there is no changing their minds since that's a much juicier story than our fertility problems being based on a simple missing uterus.
This song is our theme song because every single word speaks to us. If you pay attention to the words, it could even be from our future child's voice (not intended by Lady A, I am sure), telling us to follow our hearts and not worry because we will be together someday. We chose this song not only because of the lyrics, but because of how positive it is that everything will work out, and the general upbeat feeling of the song. Author's Note: I am a HUGE Lady Antebellum fan, and this song really struck my heart. In fact, almost every one of their songs do, but that's another story for another time. This song "Compass" may have different meaning to other people, like following your dreams, or a loved one coming home, or anything else. This is just my take on the song based on the point we are at in our lives right now.
